Bandwidth Monitor - Track real-time network usage (Updated Jul 2026)

Description:
Bandwidth Monitor enables you to track and visualize the upload and download traffic on your device. View real-time and total data usage for any connected network adapter, and even overlay a second adapter on the same chart to compare them side by side.

While monitoring, a live dashboard shows your current, average and peak speeds for both upload and download, along with session totals and a session timer. The Live Chart tab graphs speeds over an adjustable history window (1 minute up to 24 hours) in your choice of unit — Kbps, Mbps, MB/s or KB/s. The Active Connections tab lists every TCP connection on the machine with the owning process, its PID, local and remote endpoints and connection state, and the Usage History tab keeps a record of past monitoring sessions — date, time range, interface, duration, data transferred and peak speeds.

You can also set a speed alert that flags when combined traffic exceeds a threshold you choose, minimise the tool to the system tray where the icon's tooltip shows live up/down speeds, and export your data as a per-second CSV, a polished self-contained HTML report with an interactive chart, a plain-text session log, or a PNG snapshot of the chart itself.

How to use:
FW Admin Tech Tool Pro - Bandwidth Monitor

1. Choose the network adapter you wish to monitor from the Interface 1 list — each entry shows the adapter's name and whether it is currently up. Click the list to refresh it if you've just connected an adapter. Optionally pick a second adapter under Interface 2 (compare) to overlay its traffic on the chart as dashed lines.

2. Click the "Start Monitoring" button to begin viewing real-time traffic statistics for the selected adapter. The dashboard updates every second with current, average and peak speeds, session totals and elapsed time, and the status line confirms the adapter and its IP address. Tick "Auto-start on launch" if you want monitoring to begin automatically whenever you open the tool.

3. Watch the Live Chart tab as traffic flows — upload in red, download in blue, with the comparison adapter shown as dashed lines when selected. Adjust History (minutes) to show anywhere from 1 minute to 24 hours of activity, and switch the Display unit between Kbps, Mbps, MB/s and KB/s at any time.

4. (Optional) Set a speed alert. Tick "Alert if >" and enter a threshold in Mbps — while monitoring, the alert line shows a green "OK — below threshold" or an orange warning with the combined speed whenever traffic exceeds your limit.

5. Check the Active Connections tab to see every TCP connection on the machine — which process owns it, its PID, the local and remote endpoints, and the connection state (ESTABLISHED, LISTEN, TIME_WAIT and so on). The list refreshes automatically every few seconds while the tab is open, with a running connection count at the top.

6. Review past sessions on the Usage History tab. Every time you stop monitoring, the session is recorded — date, time range, interface, duration, data uploaded and downloaded, and peak speeds — so you can look back over your usage across days or weeks.

7. Export your data when you need it. Export CSV saves the per-second session data for analysis in a spreadsheet; Export HTML produces a self-contained report — complete with summary cards and an interactive chart — that opens in any browser; Chart Snapshot saves the current chart as a PNG image; and Export Session Log saves the running text log. Reset Log clears the log and all session counters when you want a fresh start.

8. Minimise the window and Bandwidth Monitor keeps working from the system tray — hover over the tray icon to see the live upload and download speeds, or right-click it to start or stop monitoring, reopen the window, or exit. Your settings — history length, display unit and auto-start — are remembered for next time.

What You Can Do With This Program

Potential Uses for Bandwidth Monitor Tool
  • Identify Bandwidth Bottlenecks: Quickly spot devices or applications causing slowdowns by analyzing real-time and historical traffic data for individual network adapters — then flip to the Active Connections tab to see exactly which processes are talking on the network.

  • Optimize Network Performance: Detect and address network congestion or overuse for smoother operation and improved efficiency, both at home and in business environments. Compare two adapters side by side to see which link is carrying the load.

  • Track Data Usage: Monitor upload and download amounts to ensure you don't exceed ISP-imposed data caps and avoid extra charges — the Usage History tab keeps session-by-session totals you can look back on.

  • Enhance Security: Identify unusual spikes in bandwidth usage that could signal malware infections, unauthorized access, or security breaches. Set a threshold alert to be flagged the moment combined traffic exceeds your chosen limit, and use Active Connections to see which process is responsible.

  • Enable Informed Decision-Making: Use detailed traffic patterns and trends to plan for bandwidth upgrades or to allocate network resources more effectively — the HTML report gives you a shareable summary with charts, and the CSV export feeds any spreadsheet analysis.

  • Support Cost Management: Recognize and control unnecessary bandwidth usage to save on network expenses and optimize your internet plan.

  • Improve Troubleshooting: Quickly diagnose causes of slow internet speeds, application lag, or stalled network devices — a chart snapshot captures the evidence in one click.

  • Monitor and Enforce Usage Policies: Track compliance with organization network use policies by monitoring adapters, connections and usage history over time.

  • Plan for Growth: Accumulate historical data to anticipate peak usage periods and future bandwidth requirements — every session's duration, totals and peaks are recorded automatically.
